**  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE  **

Dear Community Member,

The cooler temperatures and even the rainy weather have been a nice change considering what we’ve all experienced over the past summer and fall. I know many of you are busy this time of the year and are enjoying school holiday celebrations as we approach the end of the first semester of the school year. We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our students and staff, and invite you to visit our schools during this school year as they showcase student talent. With one week remaining before semester end, I want to use this opportunity to share some information with you before the Winter Break.

First, as many of you know, Fort Bend ISD holds its graduation ceremonies at the Toyota Center. We’ve just learned there is a change to the Fort Bend ISD 2012 Graduation Schedule for those students graduating on June 2. Due to the National Basketball Association late start and a Toyota Center scheduling conflict, Fort Bend ISD has to move graduation ceremonies scheduled for Saturday, June 2 to Thursday, May 31. The FBISD high school graduation ceremonies scheduled for Friday, June 1 will not change. We are notifying you of this conflict as quickly as we learned of it to give students and their families time to make any schedule arrangements.  The decision was made to move the June 2 graduation ceremonies to May 31 to best accommodate the changes and minimize the impact to our seniors and their families.

Please note the revised 2012 Graduation Schedule for FBISD High Schools:

Thursday, May 31 (New Times)   Friday, June 1 (No Changes)

9:00 a.m. – Willowridge                     9:00 a.m. – Elkins
11:00 a.m. – Austin                           11:30 a.m. – Hightower
2:30 p.m. – Dulles                             2:00 p.m. – Marshall
5:00 p.m. – Travis                             4:00 p.m. – Kempner
7:30 p.m. – Bush                               6:30 p.m. – Clements

Important links with the revised 2012 Graduation Schedule, Questions & Answers, and Exam Schedules are posted on the District’s website at www.fortbendisd.com under “Quick Links.” Contact information is provided if you have questions about the changes. Our high schools will be notifying seniors and their parents of the changes via parent letters, campus websites, newsletters and mail. We are committed to provide all of our seniors with exceptional graduation ceremonies.

Second, we are pleased to report our District is maintaining its competitive position as a school system of choice for families of close to 70,000 students. Quality schools are one of the reasons that Fort Bend County is among the fastest growing counties in the nation.  We are pleased that Fort Bend ISD has captured 90 percent of the market share of K-12 school-age children living in the District who attend our schools. The other 10 percent of the children are enrolled in private (five percent), charter (three percent) or other districts (one percent), as well as those who are home school students (two percent). Note that due to the rounding of these percentages, they do not add up to 10 percent.

In sum, Fort Bend ISD compares quite favorably with nationally recognized school districts of a similar size and demographic makeup as Fort Bend ISD. A recent Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award recipient, Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, captured 85 percent of its market share of school-age children living in the school system, as well as Florida Sterling Quality Award recipient, Brevard Public Schools in Florida, with 85 percent of its market share.

In closing, thank you for your support as we all work together to make Fort Bend ISD a school district of choice. We want to assure you we are committed to continue to do everything possible to provide a quality education for each of our students.

Sincerely,

Tim Jenney, FBISD Superintendent
