Fort Bend ISD Students to Observe WATCH Week, March 5-9

FORT BEND ISD - Students in Fort Bend ISD will observe WATCH Week on March 5-9 by taking part in various activities to help them understand the five risk factors  (Weight, Activity, Tobacco, Cholesterol and High Blood Pressure) for heart attacks and strokes. FBISD schools are planning numerous activities to engage the students during the week-long observance.

Garcia Middle School, for instance, will host its “Curriculum and Wellness Night” on March 1, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm in the school gym. The event will feature educational centers focusing on heart health, tobacco prevention/cessation, diabetes prevention, and drug awareness. Members of the Shape Up Sugar Land Youth Committee will host numerous physical activity stations that will provide activity in jump rope, weight lifting, yoga, as well as a basketball free throw challenge. Parents will also have the opportunity to have their blood pressure checked.

At Missouri City Middle School, students will take the WATCH Pledge and hear daily announcements relating to the five risk factors for heart attacks and strokes, as well as the benefits of drinking water. Faculty and staff will have the opportunity to have their blood pressure checked by the school nurse, and will receive tips on "Eight Mood Boosters for Monday Mornings." The school will also host a Parent Involvement Night on March 6 to provide parents and guardians with health-related information and interactive activities. Members of Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) will also participate in the WATCH Your Wellness Health Fair on March 3.

WATCH Your Wellness Health Fair

To help kick off WATCH Week, FBISD and the Fort Bend Medical Society Alliance will host the 5th Annual WATCH Your Wellness Health Fair on Saturday, March 3, from 11:00 to 2:00 pm, in the Sugar Land Town Square. The Health Fair is a free event and will provide more than 50 booths offering health information, giveaways, health screenings and live entertainment.
