IB Middle Years Programme Academy Students Celebrate Diversity while Promoting Community Service
FORT BEND ISD - Students enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB-MYP) at Missouri City Middle School have been involved in numerous activities throughout the school year to celebrate diversity and promote community service.
The school hosted its second annual International Festival, “It’s a Different World: Celebrating Our Diversity,” in the fall. The event gave students the opportunity to learn about different cultures represented throughout the community. Activities included cultural performances and demonstrations, cultural cuisine, music, raffled prizes, and other activities for students and their families to enjoy.
In addition to celebrating diversity, students are also learning about the importance of giving back to the community. As one of its IB Area of Interaction community service learning projects, students are holding a coin drive through May 1 to support Somalia refugees affected by the drought in East Africa. Proceeds from the project will be donated to a displaced Somalian family.
The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB-MYP) at Missouri City Middle School is offered to all seventh and eighth grade students at the campus. The program provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers. Missouri City Middle School is currently the only middle school in FBISD and one of only 38 in the state to offer the IB-MYP.
