Two FBISD Students Named Top Winners in Texas History Day Program

FORT BEND ISD - Fort Bend ISD students, Nikita Kansra of Travis High School and Christina Dillion of Clements High School were two of the top winners in this year's Texas History Day Contest. Nikita, an outgoing 10th grader, earned second place for her historical paper titled, "Citizen of the World: The Actions and Legacies of Labor Activist and Socialist Eugene V. Debs." Christina, also an outgoing 10th grader, received the Jane McCallum Women in Texas History Award for her individual performance in "Dream for the Stars, Strive for the Dream: Individual Women in the Space Program," which addresses the obstacles women overcame to be active participants in the space program.

Recognized nationwide, the Texas History Day Contest encourages students to choose historical topics related to a theme and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews and historic sites. After analyzing and interpreting their sources and drawing conclusions about their topics' significance in history, students present their work in original papers, websites, exhibits, performances and documentaries. The products are entered into competitions in the spring at local, state and national levels where they are evaluated by professional historians and educators. The program culminates in a national competition in June held at the University of Maryland at College Park.

FBISD finalists included: Meredith Spalding, Carter Shults and Maggie McMeans of Fort Settlement Middle School (group performance); Subhash Gubba and Lawrence Wu of Sartartia Middle School (group documentary) and Travis Yeh of Sartartia Middle School (individual documentary).
