Fort Bend ISD Graduate to Begin Surgery Residency in New Jersey

FORT BEND ISD - Kadria Derrick, a 2001 graduate of Elkins High School, recently graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Medicine and will begin a surgery residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark. She has completed medical research and/or clinical internships at the University of Texas School of Medicine Department of Surgery-Cardiothoracic Surgery; New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weil Cornel School of Medicine-Vascular Surgery; Port-of-Spain Trinidad West Indies General Hospital-Neurosurgery Preceptorship; Tikur Andessa Hospital, Addis Ababa Ethiopia Anesthesiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery; and Texas A&M Ichthyology Research.

In addition, Derrick has served on various professional committees, including American College of Surgeons, Neuroscience Society, American Medical Association, Ethiopian Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, the American Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Student National Medical Association for which she served as vice president. She has also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Corpus Christi Texas Metro Ministries, Mission to Mexico, and has taken part in bone marrow drives. She is the daughter of Marilyn Derrick, a Fort Bend ISD speech pathologist. [photo]
