Fort Bend ISD Reminds Parents about changes to Immunization Requirements for the 2009-2010 School Year
FORT BEND ISD - Fort Bend ISD reminds parents and students that the State has changed the immunizations requirements for the 2009-2010 school year. Students whose records have not been updated before the first day of school on August 24, will not be allowed to attend classes. Beginning in March 2009, these changes have been shared through parent letters, in district and campuses publications and websites, on school marquees, and in several phone calls reminders, etc. to make sure parents are aware of the new requirements.
Most of these changes affect the following:
Children entering kindergarten in August of 2009 will be affected by these revisions, as will those in Prekindergarten, PPCD or EC programs. Students may not be enrolled in kindergarten without proof of the required immunizations. Schools will need an updated shot record at the time of registration for the 2009/2010 school year.
All sixth-grade students who will be entering seventh grade in the school year 2009-2010 will be required to show proof of having received the following three vaccines: the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis), the meningococcal vaccine and a second varicella vaccine (As in the past, a written statement from the parent or legal guardian or physician documenting a child’s positive history of varicella disease [chickenpox] is acceptable in lieu of either dose of varicella vaccine.)
Grades 8-12 - Beginning in the 2009-2010 school year, students who have not already received the Tdap vaccine are required to receive one booster dose of Tdap when ten years have passed since the last dose of a tetanus-diptheria containing vaccine.
Please contact your child’s campus if you need additional information regarding the required immunizations.
On February 27, 2009, the Texas Legislature passed several revisions to the Texas Administrative Code. The Executive Commissioner on Health and Human Services approved changes to the “Immunization Requirements for Children and Students in Texas Public and Private Schools” on March 5, 2009.
The new vaccination rules in detail can be found on the Texas DSHS (Department of State Health Services) immunization website: www.immunizetexas.com
Parents and students may also find the information at www.fortbendisd.com, just click on “Back to School” and go to “Immunization Requirements” and “Immunizations Locations” (for the Fort Bend County Mobile Health Unit).
