U. S. Department of Education Awards Fort Bend ISD with $998,029 Grant

FORT BEND ISD - U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, announced that 123 school districts in 38 states have been awarded $116 million in new grants to help schools improve the teaching of American history. As part of the new grants, Fort Bend ISD will receive a grant award off $998,029.

“These grants give school districts an ideal opportunity to partner with other organizations that possess the content expertise to embark on a journey to enhance American history education and student academic achievement,” Duncan said. “We should seize the moment, and make history by improving the quality of teaching in U.S. history classes, as we prepare students for future careers.”

The grant will allow FBISD to provide advanced professional development opportunities for teachers to support history instruction at elementary, middle, and high school levels.

“In our partnership with Spring Branch ISD and Rice University, we will be able to provide high-impact professional development to teachers in grades five and eight, as well as high school U.S. History teachers,” explained Susan Voradakis, FBISD Secondary Social Studies Coordinator. “Experiences will include interaction with history scholars and field study trips. The teachers will work collaboratively to create resources, based on their learning opportunities that can be utilized in our district curriculum. Ultimately, this grant will help us meet the needs of many teachers.”
