Garcia Middle School Receives American Diabetes Association National Grant Award
FORT BEND ISD ― Garcia Middle School is recipient of a 2008-2009 National Grant Award of $1,000 presented by the American Diabetes Association in recognition of its coordinated school health approach to diabetes education and prevention programs. Nellie Hartsell, school nurse at Garcia, and Jill Burttschell, health and P.E. teacher, worked together throughout the 2008-2009 school year to implement various activities for Fort Bend ISD’s Coordinated School Health Program. Some of the activities included a district-wide Diabetes Walk; an employee exercise competition, which earned Garcia a first-place Star Award; and a campus-based Fit for Life class that teaches Garcia students about nutritional value and the importance of physical fitness. Garcia will use the grant award to continue its efforts in diabetes awareness and prevention.
