Settlers Way fifth-grade students visit the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land

FORT BEND ISD — Settlers Way fifth-grade students had the opportunity “to step into the story,” during their recent visit to the Narnia Exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land. Close to 30 excited parents and the fifth-grade teachers accompanied the 116 students who had previously read the novel, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.  “They loved that they actually were able to feel they were in Narnia by walking through the wardrobe lined with fur coats where they were actually met with falling snow. The exhibit was not only extensive, but also interactive,” said Sherry DeMont, Settlers Way fifth-grade team leader.

Along with the Narnia exhibit, the students viewed a planetarium show and the Museum’s permanent exhibits that included a collection of living frogs and the amethyst and geodes on display. Museum volunteers conducted mini lessons with the students about dinosaur bones, shells and fossils. There was also an excellent lesson with an animated globe that used high-speed computers, projectors and advanced imaging techniques to create the illusion of a planet, Sun, moon or any other celestial body rotating in space.

“It was a rich experience that far surpassed our expectations,” said Sherry DeMont, fifth-grade team leader at Settlers Way Elementary School.
