Fifteen Years and Still Going Strong! FBISD’s Reading Recovery Celebrates Anniversary

FORT BEND ISD - Fort Bend ISD Reading Recovery (RR) Program staff recently joined former teachers, students, district staff and business and community members at a reception to celebrate the program’s 15th anniversary and the 10th anniversary of the Descubriendo la Lecture (DLL) program.

The event gave program participants and supporters the opportunity to share and learn about program highlights that have taken place over the years. Since its existence in FBISD, the RR/DLL programs have served more than 8,612 first-grade students who have had difficulty in learning to read and write, and has an impressive success rate with 90 percent of former first-grade students meeting the standards for the third-grade reading component of the TAKS test in 2009.

During the celebration reception, Cynthia Bogle, RR teacher leader, welcomed guests. Dr. John Frossard, FBISD Chief Academic Officer, offered remarks and congratulated program teachers on the success of the program. Former FBISD Board President and Reading Recovery Advisory Board Member, Cynthia Knox, joined RR/DLL teacher leaders Rachel Gonzales and Maggie Spurlock in presenting awards to RR/DLL teachers who have served in the program for five or more consecutive years. Cathy Duvall, RRL teacher leader, welcomed Sugar Land Mayor Pro-Tem Russell Jones, who presented a proclamation from the Mayor’s office. Dr. Mary Jackson, Director of Special Programs, offered closing remarks.

RR/DLL program leaders will continue their anniversary celebration with graduation ceremonies for the individual campuses in May.
