FBISD’s Junior Student Leadership Group Explores City Government
FORT BEND ISD ― Members of Fort Bend ISD’s Junior Student Leadership Program experienced another fast-paced day of learning as part of their most recent seminar, “Leadership in City Government”. FBISD Board Member, Daniel Menendez, sponsored the seminar, which included morning visits to The City of Sugar Land City Hall and the Sugar Land Fire Station #1, where students met with top city officials.
The first stop on their city government tour was to the City of Sugar Land City Hall, where students had the opportunity to meet with Allen Owen, Mayor of the City of Missouri City; James Thompson, Mayor of the City of Sugar Land; and Allen Bogard, City Manager for the City of Sugar Land. The city officials informed students about their roles in city government and explained how they contribute to the decision-making process concerning health, safety and financial issues that affect local citizens. The student leaders also met with some of the young professionals at City Hall to learn about their roles in government and the educational paths they took to secure their jobs.
“The purpose of this particular seminar was to inform students of what they can do to influence local government and participate in public service,” said Menendez. “Whether they consider an occupation in the public or private sector, we need young people to participate in public service so that they can be a vital and active participant in the governmental process.”
Following their visit to The City of Sugar Land City Hall, the student leadership group met with fire fighters at the Sugar Land Fire Station #1 to learn about their role in city government. Captain Michael McLemore and members of his crew spoke about the programs and services fire fighters provide to citizens, and reminded students of the importance of giving back to their community.
“No matter what course you take in life, it’s always good to be involved and give back to your community,” said Captain McLemore. “We offer a number of services that allow us to stay connected to the citizens of our community, some of which includes visiting area schools during Career Day events to provide fire and life safety tips.”
The students’ visit ended with a tour of the new fire house. Following the tour, the group met at Clements High School to have lunch and take part in StrengthFinders activities, led by program facilitator, Lynda Ruther.
