FotoFence 2010 Draws Student Participation from Six FBISD Schools

FORT BEND ISD - This year FotoFest celebrated 20 years of its school-based education program, Literacy through Photography (LTP) and Fort Bend ISD students were among the 900 youth throughout the Houston area to take part in FotoFence 2010. FotoFence is the year-end celebration of student work from FotoFest’s LTP in-school education program, which helps young people achieve better communication and writing skills using photography. Participating FBISD schools included: Dulles Middle School, Elkins High School, Kempner High School, Ridgemont Elementary School, Schiff Elementary School, and Sugar Land Middle School.

“It was a thrill to see all of the Fort Bend ISD entries on exhibit at FotoFence this year,” said Arleigh Kalinowski, ESL Coordinator. “I was so proud of all of our students. Congratulations to everyone!”

In the work at FotoFence 2010, students share experiences from their own lives and address issues such as global warming, immigration, divorce, friendship, the environment, and reflections on family and community in the U.S. today through the use of photography. Students take photographs based on themes, which act as a catalyst for writing. Writing about their own photographs and lives, students build cognitive thinking skills, self-esteem, verbal literacy and awareness of their communities and surroundings. All of the FBISD participants were enrolled in the English as a Second Language Program at their schools.

FBISD participants included:
